Chapter 1 vocab.
Refugee- One who flees in search of refuge, as in times of war, political oppression, or religious persecution
Fatigue- Tiredness
Translucent- transmitting light but causing sufficient diffusion to prevent perception of distinct images, clear, lucid
Mesmerize- hypnotize
Plagued- to cause worry or distress, to smite, infest, disturb or annoy
Malnourishment- not having enough food to develop or function normally
Verandah- porch or balcony, usually roofed and often partly enclosed extending along the side of a building
Cradling- To hold or support protectively
Embedded- to fix firmly in a surrounding mass
